We went for the most amazing hike during our long weekend in Amalfi. The hike took us up about 1000 feet of elevation over stairs, smooth dirt paths and bridges. The path along Via Paradisio took us up over groves of lemon trees, grape vines, and small babbling brooks.

The best part of this hike was definitely the fact that we got up nice and early to begin! Okay, that doesn’t sound like a great thing, BUT IT IS! Since we did the hard thing and woke up early on our vacation, we were able to catch this gorgeous sunrise as we left the town of Atrani to hike into Amalfi before heading into the hills! To Get to Amalfi from our little town we walked along the sea and then through a pedestrian tunnel which dropped us right into the town square. From there it’s about a 1 mile walk through town towards the hills to get started on the trail. Hop onto Via Paradiso (Paradise Street) and get ready to climb some stairs!

Here’s where it starts to get pretty. After exiting the tunnel and walking up though the city, we finally hit the steepest set of stairs ever made. Not exactly, but steep stairs certainly wasn’t what I was expecting on a “hike”. There are very few signs marking this hike, which made it a bit confusing to start off with. But once you’re on the pathway, you’re golden. It’s so straightforward and easy, you can’t go wrong. Just keep heading in the same direction… eventually you’ll get there.

We totally did a nice and leisurely pace while climbing these stairs. We took plenty of breaks to photograph the scenery and take it all in. The best part is there wasn’t a BAD place to stop! It was all gorgeous and worth a little break to check in out.

Eventually the trail evened out and we were back to fairly level ground. Not long after that, we finally hit the dirt trail and gorgeous tree coverage. The temperature immediately dropped a good 10 degrees and we felt nice and cool without the sun beating down on us.

The scenery definitely changed a lot once we hit the woods. Nice big trees, beautiful foliage, and that fresh outdoors smell. It felt like autumn guys! We began hearing water from the nearby stream, birds chirping and the rustling of leaves as little critters scurried around.

After a nice photo excursion at this stream we packed back up and hit the trail for another little jaunt over to the next big waterfall.

This hike was gorgeous and so so worth it! I’d definitely recommend this to anyone. It’s not a hard hike at all. The stairs may be difficult on someone with bad knees, but just take it slow and you can do it. There is even a little restaurant part way up the stairs that you could stop at for a snack to break up the climb if you needed! They weren’t open yet when we passed by, but they did have a sign advertising granita (a frozen ice treat) and I’m assuming they use the lemons that were growing right outside… YUM! If that doesn’t interest you, you could just hike back down into town and stop at one of the many cafes in the town square for breakfast. That’s what we did!
