Summer is the season of travel and with so many wonderful locations just a short road trip away, it’s vital to get out of the house and explore! Otherwise you’ll surely go crazy living in such a small community. Summer is also the time that many of us have visitors from the states coming to see us and a bit of Europe. Day trips are an amazingly affordable way to get around the island and see a lot of history in a short amount of time!
This blog post will be all about one of the trips we took last year while family was in town for a visit. The Neapolis Archeological Park is in Siracusa, just an hour drive from Sigonella. There you’ll see a Greek amphitheater with a killer view of the sea and so much more. When we went they were getting set up for a big summer festival, hence the crazy obelisk’s with hieroglyphics on the stage. There are also several small caves, some even with little waterfalls throughout the park area, but the real show stopper here is the Ear of Dionysius. This cave carved into limestone gets its name from it’s obvious appearance of looking exactly like a human ear. And since it has this shape, the acoustics are amazing. Just the smallest of whisper at the opening of the cave can resonate all the way to the back. Watching the massive tour groups test out this legend was hilarious. Inside, well it’s a dark cave. So for those who don’t appreciate the history and war past of the area it honestly won’t be the most impressive trip. But that’s all the more reason to tie it in with another location and keep the fun rolling. I am a bit of a history lover and genuinely enjoy exploring and seeing new places. What better way to get your daily dose of Vitamin D?
The best part about this location is that it’s close to lots of other fun spots making it a great day trip or even weekend get away! I would recommend tying this visit in with a trip to Ortigia. <- Follow that link to read about one of our many visits to Oritigia!
